Frequently asked questions
Got a question about your heat pack? Here's everything we get asked.
How long does it stay warm?
30 to 60 minutes from a single heat, depending on the size of the pack and the temperature of the room. Our hand warmers stay warm for around 20 to 30 minutes. You can reheat as often as you like.
How long do I microwave it for?
Start with 1–2 minutes for the larger heat packs and 30–45 seconds for the hand warmers. If you're unsure, always heat in 30-second intervals — you can always add more time, but you can't undo an overheated pack. Never leave the microwave unattended.
Is it safe to fall asleep with?
We don't recommend falling asleep with a freshly heated pack in direct contact with your skin. Once it cools to body temperature it's safe to keep nearby, but please never reheat a pack and place it on someone who's already asleep.
Can I use it during pregnancy?
Many people do — but every pregnancy is different, so please chat to your midwife or GP first. We're not in a position to give medical advice.
Can my kids use them?
Yes — they're lovely for sore tummies, growing pains, and chilly nights. We recommend an adult does the heating, test the temperature on the inside of your wrist first, and supervise use. Not recommended for children under 3.
What's inside them?
100% Australian-grown lupin seeds. We chose lupins because they hold heat beautifully, feel soft and grounding, and don't have the strong wheaty smell you get with cheaper heat packs.
Are they gluten-free?
Yes — lupins are naturally gluten-free, unlike wheat-filled heat packs.
Do they smell?
Lupins have a very mild, natural scent that fades after the first few uses. They don't have the strong wheat smell that wheat-filled packs have. Some people find the gentle warm scent comforting.
I have a lupin or legume allergy — can I use one?
If you have a known lupin or legume allergy, we'd recommend giving our packs a miss to be safe. The seeds are fully enclosed in cotton, but we want you to feel completely safe.
How do I clean it?
Spot clean only with a damp cloth. Please don't put it in the washing machine — the filling will clump and the pack won't work the same.
Can I use it as a cold pack?
Yes. Pop it inside a plastic bag and into the freezer for an hour or two, and you've got yourself a cold pack — lovely for headaches, sprains, or hot summer days.
How long will it last?
With gentle care, several years. Over time the lupins can lose their heat-holding magic — if you notice yours isn't warming the way it used to, it's probably time for a new one.
Where are you based?
We sew everything by hand in Darley, Victoria, Australia.
Do you ship internationally?
Not yet — we currently ship Australia-wide only. If you're outside Australia and want one, drop us an email and we'll see what we can do.
Do you sell at markets?
Yes — we're at local markets most weekends. Follow us on Instagram (@lulaandme) for upcoming dates.
